What do your children use the Internet for?

The Internet is a completely amazing place, it can provide a recipe for dinner, instructions on how to fix the washer and help you trace lost family.  For children it can help them with their homework, teach them how to climb a tree and allow almost constant contact with their friends – amongst hundreds of other things!

Do you know what your children use the Internet for?

This CEOPs film is quite thought provoking (and interestingly dubbed!), finishing with the statement “In real life you would protect your children, so why not protect them on the Internet?”

A good start would be

  • Turning on the Internet filter provided by your ISP (Internet Service Provider)
  • Checking the settings are suitable for the age of the children in your house
  • Windows 8 allows you to print a report of recent searches
  • Speaking to your child about what they use the Internet for
  • Investigating the Parental Controls that are available on gaming consoles, tablets and mobile phones

Ask your children the same questions about their online activities as you would their offline ones

  • What are you doing?
  • Where are you going?
  • Who are you doing it with?
  • Maybe add a why in there too – they might be able to teach you something!
