Heather Alder, a Year 11 and GCSE German student has been awarded a prestigious post as a UK-German Youth Ambassador by the UK-German Connection. She was awarded the place after completing an application process which included a personal statement, a letter from her Language teacher, Mrs Underwood and one from her Head Teacher, Mr Wood confirming her ability to represent LSA as an Ambassador for the project. She downloaded the application from the UK-German Connection website and submitted it to compete with other young people in the UK for the role.  Her success comes with her other accolades of involvement in the International School as she has been involved in a number of projects such as Comenius, eTwinning and the German Exchange which certainly helped in her securing a place for the 2013-14 academic Year.

The UK-German Youth Ambassadors are a network of young people in the UK and Germany who are passionate about the other country and keen to help promote UK-German activities and encourage other young people to get involved. They share their experiences with other pupils in their school and local area, and help support language and intercultural learning in primary schools.

Heather will meet with the other Youth Ambassadors twice a year, once in the UK and once in Germany, to develop projects and presentations based on authentic cultural input with designated partners from the other country. Thematic debates on current issues complement their activities and lead to the creation of an online magazine.

Speaking about the opportunity Heather said, “I really couldn’t believe it when I received the email. I was so excited especially as they said that the competition was really tough and had a lot of applicants this year.” I’m really looking forward to meeting the 40 other Ambassadors from the UK and Germany in London this October and again next year in Berlin.”

Sandra Underwood, School Link Coordinator and mentor for Heather said “I am really pleased for Heather. Her German is excellent and she has a real passion for learning the language and visiting Germany. I wish her luck and success with the programme and she will make a great representative from LSA.”

Congratulations Heather and we look forward to reading about your successes on this programme over the next year!
