Image of Welcoming the Cross Phase Literacy Project

LSA Technology & Performing Arts College, St Thomas’ Primary School and Mayfield Primary School have joined forces to take on a new initiative geared towards securing literacy levels among Year 6 students. The cross-phase Literacy Project was made possible through the support of The Lytham Schools Foundation who agreed to match -fund the project for the benefit of children living in the Lytham St Anne’s area.

The aim of the project is to develop transitional relationships with two of the local primary schools whilst also providing support directly to pupils through booster sessions delivered on a daily basis. The sessions are aimed at improving skills in writing and reading comprehension, with a further emphasis on spelling and grammar. In addition, the member of staff seconded from the High School to deliver these sessions, provides a familiar face and a connection for the primary students when they move up to the “big school” in September.

Mrs. Kendall, the Cross Phase Literacy Coordinator said “I’m really enjoying working with the students in the different schools. We follow a programme of activities which have been developed to meet the literacy needs of the students.  The children work in small groups, allowing me to really focus on the individuals who need support”.  To further boost literacy skills and support Year 6 students’ transition into Year 7, LSA will also be running a Literacy Summer School to secure the ability and confidence of our incoming students!

This project shows just how committed the Lytham St Anne’s community is in ensuring that as many of its children as possible get the very best start to secondary education and we hope that the Foundation will acknowledge these benefits and agree to support us again next year.
