Recently, nine year 11 students completed their Literacy Leader Certificate. This is exciting news for LSA as it is the highest number to complete the award to date.

The Literacy Leader Certificate is awarded to students in KS4 and KS5 who - as well as demonstrating high levels of literacy - help other students across the school improve their reading and writing skills.

The awards were presented to: Lauren Rowland; Emily Taylor; Eleanor Saxelby; Charlotte Hobson; Harriet Cunningham; Dominic Rae; Murathan Cobandag; Lauren Murray and Zoe Houghton.

Even though these students have now left Lytham High, their efforts are still prominent in the school. As well as teaching mini lessons and becoming reading buddies, the group have created displays and resources to help support LSA students’ literacy needs.

As well as allowing the leaders to help other students, the award also helped them prepare for the future. Lauren Rowland, who has been offered a place at London’s Fashion and Retail Academy, said “It was enjoyable being creative” and - speaking of the displays she created - “I am proud of the final product. I was able to mention what I had done in my interview at the Fashion Academy and they were very impressed.” Eleanor Saxelby, who will continue studying to achieve her goal of becoming a teacher, commented that “it gave me an opportunity to feel what it is like standing in front of a class room. This gave me a lot of confidence.”

Moreover, completing the certificate turned out to be a lot of fun. Charlotte Hobson commented “It was really fun to see the students interacting and joining in”. Emily Taylor added “I enjoyed seeing how students lower down the school read, in comparison to students in year 11.”

Their contribution towards the school’s aim of continually raising the standards of young people’s literacy has been huge. Although they will be missed, their legacy will continue. There are still a number of Literacy Leaders in year 10 who are working towards completing their certificate and - for the first time this year - we have Sixth Form Literacy Leaders who are currently making an outstanding contribution to the development of reading and writing skills across the school.

If you would like to join our ever growing team, speak to Mr Prescott about becoming a Literacy Leader.
