11 May 2017

On Wednesday evening, 3rd May, the private view of B&FC 'Young Artist of the Year' was held at the University Centre Blackpool. Schools from the Fylde coast are invited to submit the work of 10 of their best students. LSA had seven students pieces selected for exhibition and were by far the best represented school. All students, their family and friends, and the Art team attended the impressive evening.

The Art department would like to commend the students selected for exhibition for their exceptional art and hard work. We would and to also like to further congratulate Matthew Thompson 11 MCN who received the runner up prize to Artist of the Year and Kelsey Lester 11 NDO who won first prize and who is now B&FC Fylde coast 'Young Artist of the Year 2017’. The students’ achievements also earned them a £50 and £100 voucher respectively for both themselves and the school and the added exciting opportunity to attend a masterclass workshop at B&FC.

Kelsey said “I was thrilled to be a part of such a creative exhibition which displayed a range of art from all over the Fylde with such high quality. I was shocked when they had announced that I had won, but I was so pleased and honoured as there was many amazing pieces that I competed with. All the hard work payed off.”

Runner up, Matthew Thompson reacted "There was a plethora of amazing art inside the Blackpool and Fylde College gallery, each deserving of a prize so it was especially surprising when I won the place of runner-up. A great feeling of achievement followed and I was ecstatic to win such a highly-regarded award. It has encouraged me to continue a career in the arts, specifically fashion, and taught me to believe in my creative abilities. I am very thankful to both my art teacher (Ms. Moore) and the B&FC team."

Proud teacher Beth Moore says “The students have worked incredibly hard over the past two years, and to be selected for this prestigious exhibition seems like a very fitting end to their Art GCSE.  The work was framed up and looked really professional situated in a gallery space.  I hope this encourages and inspires them to continue with their art practice in the future. “

The work is on display at the University Centre Gallery: 2nd – 26th May 2017, 9am – 5pm Weekdays only and will also be on display in the foyer during the final half term.
