Image of Girls in Computing

Lancaster University asked did we have any girls who would be interested in doing a Girls in Computing day and luckily Bea, Summer and Kyla stepped up.

We arrived at the campus and were escorted to the Bowland Theatre. Here we listened to an inspirational talk by Dr Lucy Rogers who does seem to have done most things engineering and code related! A very interesting lady.

The girls then started on their robot workshop – inspired by the imminent relaunch of Robot Wars. They were given a variety of components to build their robots and more importantly glitter! The girls were given a BBC Micro:bit to control their robots.

Amazing creativity ensued and a butterfly, caterpillar and bee robot were built. After a swift lunch the girls started coding.

They soon got to grasps with how the coding worked and were writing loops to control their robots – getting them to demonstrate quite impressive dancing skills!

The girls had an amazing time and asked if the activity happened again next year would they be able to go! Thanks to Lorraine Underwood at Lancaster University for organising and all the people who made such an inspirational day happen.
