Image of Vegetarians for Lent

Two of our Year 12 students, Amy Hanson (17) and Jonathan Abbott (16) who are in a group of students raising money for the 'Build a School'  charity in Malawi have come up with a very personal and innovative.  They both decided to become vegetarians for Lent.  They are totally abstaining from meat, fish and gelatine.  So far they have been promised £530 in sponsorship, which will be used to build an administration block for teachers.

Jonathan who is at present studying maths, psychology, Government & Politics and Sociology said " Before coming up with this idea, I thought that anything that didn't contain meat was a snack!   As it is I have been eating really healthily but can't promised I shan't be eating meat at Easter.  I do miss my usual diet."

Amy said "I have discovered the delights of cooking Quorn and am eating a lot of pasta!"

So far this group and Head of Humanities Gill Boulter, have raised nearly £3,00,  by mounting  a show "Teachers Got Talent", Lytham's Got Talent for Students, Candy Cane Valentines and raffles and in the pipeline bag packing at Supermarkets, coffee mornings and other fund raisers.

Gill Boulter said " They are a wonderful group of young people who are working enthusiastically.  For the two vegetarians the going has been tough and they have had to show real commitment to succeed."
